Tips for the New Year

Whenever the New Year comes, it hits us - the urge to reform and make ourselves into our ideal selves.  Resolutions can be great, but how can you stick to them?  Here are some ways:

1. Decide why weight loss is important to you.  It will strengthen your resolve.  Make a detailed assessment of where you currently are and where you would like to be.

2. Know your weaknesses and keep yourself out of temptation's way whenever possible.

3. Learn to recognize what emotions trigger your worst eating habits.  Find other ways of dealing with them.

4. If you are bored, seek out fun constructive activities.  This way you won't be tempted to overeat to fill a vacuum in your life.

5. When you make a mistake (and you will), acknowledge it and move on.  No one is perfect but the successful person refuses to stay down for long.

6. Set small goals that are realistic. A goal that is too large can set you up for failure and makes you nervous.  It is better to lose 5 pounds and keep it off than to lose 20 and put it all right back on.

7. Focus on performance not outcome.

8. Favor positive over negative goals.  Positive goals tell us what to do - negative ones tell us what to avoid.  It's best to focus on things that make your happy and help you move forward.

9. Set priorities.  Spend your free time on things that really matter in the long run.

10. Be flexible.  Successful weight losers have a plan yet can go with the flow as the need arises.

11  Create a support network to help you cope (such as your pals in TOPS)

12, Periodically assess your progress, adjusting your approach or modifying your goals as needed.

13. Don't punish yourself for failure, but rather reward yourself with small and large incentives for reaching goals.  The greatest reward is in knowing that you have done your best.
